Scripture Passage:  “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Psalms 119:105

 

Dear Friends,

 

     The Word of God is so precious.  It is precious because it is a person.  It is precious because it is God breathed.  It is precious because it is the exact representation of who God is.  The Word of God is compared to a two-edged sword.

     It is powerful and cutting.  It can cut going and coming and can penetrate the toughest of hearts. It can even dissect the thoughts and intents of the heart.   Hebrews 4:12   It is also compared to a treasure.  The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.  That treasure is Jesus and Jesus is the Word.  It is like a pearl of great price that a man would give all that he has so he can purchase it.   Matthew 13:44-46   The Word is also like precious metals that are mined from God’s depth and are used as a foundation upon which to build.  That foundation is Jesus Christ and His Word.  Anything less is just wood, hay and stubble.  Useless.  To study God’s Word and to dig deep for its truths is like mining for nuggets of gold, which when it is found becomes priceless in its value. The Word of God in Scripture has been written over a span of 5,000 years and has stood the test of time, tyrants, and skeptics.  It can be purchased in almost every language known and never loses its power to impact through the process of translation.  It is undoubtedly the greatest book known to man.  Why?  Because it is the Living Word of God.

 

     The Psalmist compares the Word to a lamp and a light.  A lamp for the feet, and a light for dark paths.  In this day of modern lighting we often forget what it is like to be in the dark.  Almost everywhere I have traveled in the United States when dusk comes, street lights start to come on.  Lights come on inside of the house and illumination comes out.  (We even keep the lights on in the daytime.)  There is rarely a time that we are without penetrating light.  As a child, I remember when a thunder storm would knock the power out and we would be without electricity.  Momma and Daddy would get the old kerosene lamp or Coleman lantern out and light up the house so we could experience what it was like growing up in their day.  You could barely read even if you were right beside it and everything in the room had an eerie shadow cast over it.  In today’s world with LED and fluorescent lighting, I don’t even like the old candescent light bulb.

 

      Jesus said in Matthew 3:19 that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil.  The light that has come is the Word.  The Word is Jesus.  People would rather live in darkness than to know the Word.  The Word exposes sin and illuminates the shadows and darkness in our lives.  So the next time you are walking down a spiritually dark path and cannot find your way, flip open the switch of the Word of God and allow Jesus to light your way.
